I read the ExTeam blogs on SANs, and I very much appreciated their guidance,
but it had all the air of a kludge ''oops, try this"
When I went shopping for a SAN some of the major certificate vendors didn't
even have an Exchange 07 compatible SAN cert ready yet, and it was well
after RTM.
I ended up with Entrust because the ExchTeam blogs recommended it and they
had worked closely with them to develop a compatible SAN. In spite of that
close collaboration, it took Entrust four (that's 4) attempts at tayloring a
cert that would work with my Exchange 07.
And you ask me about due diligence?

If you have done due diligence, then you should know about SAN certificates,
as they are mentioned multiple times on the Exchange team's blog (along with
step by step instruction on how to install them using PowerShell) and you
will get certificate prompts when accessing darn near anything in an
Exchange 2007 lab environment. If someone decides to go buy Exchange on a
whim and upgrade it this weekend then you are correct, they will have some
BIG surprises in store. ;-)

OK, so you and Tim are better shoppers than I and were
better prepared for this one. Now, can we have a show
of hands: how many admins out there who are studying
for or doing a migration to 07 had any idea that a SAN
cert will very likely be required?

If you insisted on Verisign certs, they were VERY
expensive.
Even Verisign bought a smaller company to sell SAN
certs in the last year, though.

I have SAN certs and they are not very expensive. If
you paid a lot for yours then you paid too much. I
have the exact situation you describe and paid less
than $200 to cover all of my various names. Much
cheaper than the old way in my opinion.

we're going off on a tangent here, but say your
Exchange 2007 Server has a public Cname and a
different internal hostname (not an uncommon
situation), then your "very cheap" certificate will
not work, even though it worked before on Server
2003
with the same name split. You'll need a 'Subject
Alternative Name' certificate, and they ain't cheap.
