This has got to be a joke. Taking a spare drive from a RAID 5 is not a valid backup scheme... It doesn't protect you at all. The spare drive is a mirror of one of the drives that's actually part of the RAID. Since there's no way to guarantee that the data on the drive it was mirroring wasn't changed during the night (unless the machine it's attached to is shut down prior to the removal of the drive in which case the probability of a drive failure is 0 anyway) then the spare is useless and the RAID is just as broken.
