You still have to connect to the VPN to synchronize. So yes, it is still as secure :-)
The big gain is that users do not notice the performance hit from the VPN because they are running everything in offline mode and just requesting updated information every 10 minutes or whatever. The only info that gets sent across the VPN is new messages, and anything they send.
