Anyone try reaching Symantec Gold Support during the Nimda fiasco? The

True, maybe I have spent too long in this business and got used to working
with non perfect software, support, advice. So I never expect anything to
work like the publicity says that it will. (except if I have written it
myself of course) :)

OUCH! but then I only passed English at CSE level. (should not that be "an
AV solution" pray??) :)

Trouble is when you buy a AV solution you want a trusted package including
product, support and advice. Antigen is the only one that provides this.
WIth an AV solution, when you need support you need it yesterday. Groupshi*
has lost sight of this. I believe the support for Antigen to be superior and
the product to be superior so that's where I spend my AV pound (dollar).

Can I just point out that the correct plural of virus is viri. I can accept
"viruses" from those on the other side of the Pond (we have to humo(u)r them
when they speak English) but not "virus's".

I absolutely agree about the support and even NAI admit its crapp,
supposedly working on fixing it. I have spent an hour on the phone holding
and not got through, but that was Virus Scan support answered in USA I
believe. Groupshield support, I get answered very quickly and resolved
quickly, but then again that is dealt with just down the road from us in the
UK. On this customer site which I support, we now buy the product from a
supplier who provide their own free Tech support on the products..(so
everyone admits support from manufacturer is crapp, even the resellers). My
personal opinion is that it all started going downhill when Dr Solomon's
sold out.

However, support is not product. I work for a consultancy firm too, we have
major contracts across the UK. Other sites including our own office using
Norton and other AV products, have been hit with Nimda, Sir Cam, Loveletter
etc. In the three and a half years that I have been responsible for this
customer site and one other where the customers have NAI, not one virus has
got through to a user or back out again, (no I don't just rely on NAI to
advise me of virus infections, so I would know ). Maybe we have been lucky,
or maybe it's the way the site is designed and run, who knows. We
constantly receive virus's even from our own international sites (no Global
policy in this company) but as yet, nothing passed on through here. As you
say, you purchase a product, register and get no support. I agree, that is
totally PANTS. But don't throw the baby out with the bath water. NAI ain't
perfect, but neither are any of the other products available. I can
understand though how it might be a problem for a smaller company or
consultancy's even (like a few of these one man bands out there) where they
don't have the expertise and resources to solve things internally. So maybe
NAI is not the product for small sites.

Anyway I totally agree about the support, just thought that after the
avalanche of vague comments about the product that maybe a little
perspective was needed.

To start:

I tried to contact technical support to get the hotfix7 which corrects the
problem with mutually exclusive blocking of filenames and extensions. It was
only through this list was I able to get the fix. Technical support spent 2
(TWO F*($#@#&) weeks asking for my grant number. When I provided the grant
number, it took them another 4 days to reply back asking for my name and the
company name for which the grant number was registered.

I understand that everything has to be tied to the registration number.
However, I did indicate that I was a consultant and registered software to
several ompanies of which I provided names. 3 weeks later - still no
response.

I also contacted one of the major account people for questions on how to
ensure any 1 company is protected from intrusion - asked questions about
products, upgrades etc... weeks later, still no information.

Bottom line - you purchase a product, register the serial number and don't
get the support you paid for.

And also the 50+ files sitting in the Archive directory that came up
infected with Magitrar and a whole bunch of other stuff also gave me a clear
indication that Groupshield was NOT catching everything. That was the last
straw.

You can find the document for manually removing Groupshield on the CD -
gse45nag.pdf - in the - \GrpShld\Exchange\Server_v4xx directory. I believe
page 52. Very simple procedure.

So what exactly do people not like about the NAI products?

Go ahead and visit NAI's website and hunt down the document for manually
removing GroupShield from Exchange. Once you've accomplished that,
installing Antigen is a piece of cake. I think you'll need your grant number
to search the Prime Support Knowledge base for the documentation. If I can
find my copy, I'll send it off to ya.

Great choice to go with Antigen.
