While ArcCrap might follow the DR whitepapers, it has the problem of say... "NOT WORKING" ever.

Arcserve is a running joke on this list, and yet it follows the DR Whitepapers requirements. I used BE, with a Travan Tape drive, which sucks, but it also follows the DR Whitepaper requirements. Hopefully the DR Whitepaper will continue to be a "living document". It wasn't all that long ago that Antigen wasn't exactly a recommended MS solution, and therefore not "accepted" by a whole bunch of Exchange experts. And now look. -----Original Message----- From: Don Ely [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, January 11, 2002 10:09 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Evault vs. tape backups Here is our validation... In the event something goes wrong and either of us were to call PSS (god forbid), they would most likely tell us "DUDE, You are so NOT supported". The DR Whitepapers are pretty specific. There are many ways to backup an Exchange server. There are right ways and there are wrong ways. However, in order to best ensure that you are always able to recover your exchange server without losing any email, one should follow the DR steps that MS outlines and one should practice test restores. I do online backups of my exchange server with NT Backup right now. Mostly because my soon to be ex-boss uses ArcCrap to backup the network. When I migrated them from Send Mail to Exchange I specifically noted that they will NOT install ArcCrap on my Exchange server that I'll use plain old vanilla NT Backup. Do I like using NT Backup, no, not really, but I am re-evaluating our backup solution now so I can put something more reliable to me in place that backups the entire enterprise... I respect Don's and William's opinions', but every once in awhile I (as well as others i'm sure) require validation as to how they came to those opinions. and that's was the intent here. you are comfortable in your current environment, that may or may not be alright 6 months down the road. we don't know what Laura's current setup is, or what it is going to be and she asked the question. and just because the premier gurus' of the forum here, state it "is" or "is not" a good idea. I just want to know why? I'm sure it's based on a lot of experience, a Lot of luck, and proactive administration. but with anything, there's always room for growth either in knowledge or software. Thought it was a pretty simple and generic question actually -----Original Message----- From: Don Ely [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, January 11, 2002 10:58 AM To: MS-Exchange Admin Issues Subject: RE: Evault vs. tape backups Yeah, and I'm pretty sure William mentioned that... "No, I wouldn't trust such a setup for Exchange. Other file data, perhaps. NTBackup on Windows2000 backs up to disk." He then provided links to various sites. It wouldn't and shouldn't be a trusted setup. Those links give various options I would imagine. I haven't read them nor will I as I know how I backup exchange. Which is in the most reliable manner.
