Appreciate the suggestions but there is nothing I have not already
done.........so far, still need that one other person who has a similar
experience and has either worked through it or called Microsoft. But hey,
isn't that what this newsgroup is for, i.e. to ask questions and hopefully
to get answers

I don't have or use backupexec on this server.

The event logs point to what I have previously written, nothing that helped.

Yes, I know it does not make sense, I expect if all went smoothly w/o errors
or problems I too could say it's "low-tech", don't need that, 'nuff said.

The error is in the logfile, there are many NT std files that "are not
found"Kernel32.dll, security.dll, version.dll, ole32.dll, wsock32.dll and
about 5 more, it seems that after it takes enough of these errors it just
stops, exits and says I can continue the install later.

This problem is really annoying.............help not sarcasm is appreciated

Erm, not wanting to teach how to suck eggs and all that but a few
suggestions based on my experience....

have you checked the event logs - IS stopping suddenly sounds like a DB
corruption (event - 1018 or similar) also might give more clues as to why
the SP u/g stops,

I have done 100's of SP3 and SP4 updates without any trouble, - from a
technical point of view they really are quite a simple (low-tech) process,
i.e

it does some checks
it stops all the Exchange services
it copies new versions of the exchange files (this is where most of the
problems come in - due to files being locked by services Starts services
again

also - as mentioned below stop all other services, categories to look at
include

Hardware Agents - i.e Compaq Insight Manager, Dell hwtools etc... **IMHO -
these are usually the culprit the installer will sit there for ages and most
people forget about these** SNMP service Backup Exec Agents IIS A/V Software
- including any non-exchange aware s/w Scheduler service

Check disk space, run chkdsk on the volume with the system files?

Might also be worth re-applying the NT service pack (6a?) before running
this update - maybe your problem lies with the DLL registration of the files
you mentioned, or out-of-date versions.

Could also be worth turning up the logging in Exchange properties to see if
that sheds any light on it - for example if the IS doesn't shutdown cleanly
during the SP upgrade.

Just a few ideas/...

Cheers

I tried "UpdateExpert" I still get the same error, the install stops in the
same place, I had no problems with SP 3, SP2......if the Information would
quit stopping on it's own for no APPARENT reason, I would have left it at SP
3, so much for SP fixes........

Any other suggestions are WELCOME..........

I had problems with the installation when other services/ programs were
running. For example, stopping BackupExec seems to stop a lot of
installation problems. However, another problem I ran into was since my
servers are mostly single server shops, I run the OWA on the server. In one
instance I had installed IIS and the OWA on the PDC, after installing a BDC
and then a MS, I was able to move the OWA to it's own box. Ever since that
occurred, whenever I try to manually patch the server, it wants IIS
re-enbled.

HTH - good luck.

BTW - I started using Update Expert and I don't have to deal with this type
of stuff anymore.

Subject: Exch 5.5 - SP4 update error

I have been trying to apply SP4 to my Exch 5.5 server, it consistently stops
about 3/4 of the way through exit code is x002002000

By making a log of what's happening with "ntfilemon" I can see that quite a
few files "can't be found" e.g.. Kernel32.dll, ole32.dll, comdlg.dll
etc.during the update, TechNet seems to indicate that using the log is the
best way to determine what's wrong.......

All the missing files in the log is all that is obvious to me.

I d/l ALL the sp4 zip files from the Microsoft site.

Anyone else had this problem ?

What is the resolution ?

Thanks
