Another vote for Mail Marshal. It slices, it dices, it even makes Julienne fries - why, just look at that tomato....uuuh, maybe that's the Ronco Mail-O-Matic that I'm thinking of?....
Sorry - I think I just had a non-maskable interrupt. Yeah, I like Mail Marshal - not particularly just for spam but also for all the other great features. I don't have anywhere near the degree of Exchange expertise that you find here on this list, so it's nice to have an easy-to-setup-and-use system in front of the Exchange server that let's me completely customize how I want to handle/forward/quarantine/kill/modify/return/notify/quantify/report/relay/bl ah blah blah... in test it has been working like a charm. Trend also gets a lot of great reviews on the list(s). Beyond spam - and regardless of what product you may choose - it can be another layer of defence. I sat a Marshal test box behind our existing SMTP relay (proxy service) for some initial testing and one day about 42 instances of "my party" blew right by that proxy (bug!) where it should have died, but got hammered by Mail Marshal before even touching Exchange - and at least a few got in before our client AV sigs got rolled across the site. Granted, an Exchange pro could set it up to do a lot of this right at the server as well - and maybe the 3rd party is overkill in some situations - but for me (a highly paranoid aspiring semi-pro), it's a solid, easy to use, completely customizable "email pre-processing plant" that adds another layer of security. As for spam itself, lots of (most?) spam is end-user self-induced. I don't know if I would push for any (possibly expensive) 3rd party solution just for the sake of spam elimination - especially given that we don't get anywhere near what others on this list have talked about in the past. A big flood of spam might change that attitude pretty quick, but fortunately the 3rd party stuff out front makes my life a lot easier if & when that becomes necessary. my 2¢ (Canadian) > -----Original Message----- > From: David N.
