I think what people are probably talking about is the bit that appears in the <
> after the name.

Mary Smith <MJONES>

I operate a simple policy - name change = new account.
I don't rename accounts.
I don't reuse accounts.

The old SMTP address lives on the new account.
This page on my web site explains what needs to be done.

http://www.amset.info/exchange/usernamechange.asp

Basically if you change the alias (the bit in < >) then you will break internal
functionality of old email that the user has sent, nicknames files etc. It is
not something I tend to recommend.

Simon.

Oops, forgot those....
I also change the alias, and then add the new SMTP email address.
I never hear any complaints. Where do your users see that "the old name
gets reffrenced by outlook via the legacyexchangedn"?
And how does this cause the user much anger?

Essentially what I do too, but I also change the alias. In the case of
women who marry, I create a new SMTP address and make it the primary
keeping their old one for about 2 weeks or so to catch any mail that
they may not have notified.

This is what I do....

In ADUC (on the Exchange server)
Right-click on user:
Select "rename" - change to new last name

Right-click on user>Properties:
General tab:
Change last name and display name

Right-click on user>Properties:
Email Addresses tab:
x.400 address space, I change the SURNAME to the new last name.

Right-click on user>Properties:
Account tab:
Change the user logon name (if applicable)

IMHO, there are no good technological answers to this issue.

As far as I am concerned, a "key" is created when a user enters the
company.
They retain that key throughout their tenure with the company. Period.
It
doesn't change when they get married/divorced/witness-protection-program
any
more than their SSN or D/L number does. That key is their mailbox GUID
and
the corresponding legacyExchangeDN.

You can change the displayName all you want.

What do you guys do for name changes in AD in terms of exchange?

When a user wants their last name changed, I still find that the old
name gets reffrenced by outlook via the legacyexchangedn causing the
user much anger.
I don't want to touch the cn on the leagcyexchangedn for fear of stuff
'sploding.

Is there any good process for this?

Thanks
