We have been using VMware to take a P2V of the live servers and restoring those images from tape, then applying the Backup Exec Exchange restores onto them, but have run into serious time issues with this practice (it's useful for testing/mailbox restores though). Do you backup the entire server, backup the server image and the databases separately? Granular or not? Other options? I'm interested in a worst-case scenario where we need to get everything back from tape; assume access to a tape drive and blank servers (hardware or virtual) only. We're looking at DR sites, SAM replication, SCR etc. separately so wondering what our options are in the mean time. Speed of recovery of email service and data is key.
