It's what Office-365 uses. It's also the only official way - at least as of today - to get address list segregation in Exchange 2010.

The forest boundary exactly matches the Exchange organisational boundary. However you could certainly run both e-mail domain addresses within a single organisation and by using recipient policies ensure that each mailbox got an e-mail address in the correct e-mail domain.
