Well, the fault line is well known. After all, the Appalachian Mountains didn't arise from "nowhere". But yes, the plate boundaries are quite far away.
There is some speculation that this is an after-effect of yesterday's Colorado quake, causing an adjustment "down East". I know that here (Charlottesville, VA; just 25 miles from Mineral, VA - where the epicenter was) - inspections are ongoing for power, gas, etc. There was some minor damage. But I've not heard of anything significant. Now, given how the Richter scale works, I wouldn't be surprised if it only took a slightly stronger earthquake to incur significantly more damage. My question is now that we know we have an "active" fault line that poses significant damage potential, how up to spec are the buildings and transport systems in these areas? I have to imagine that Emergency depts. are having some late night discussions and evaluations. Since its been 1886 since anything has been reported near this large....I'm just asking...
