The rule as I understand it is that tecnically you need to get a Russian
drivers license if here more than six months, which has been generally
interpreted that if you travel in and out of the country within every six
months you are ok.

Practically the international drivers license works as does a notarized
translation, but both require that you present the actual original drivers
license with the translation or IDL. And practically you will be asked for
the license if you present the translation to the officer.

In addition, if you do decide to drive in Russia, which for many reasons I
am not sure that I recommend unless you are prepared for challenges. For
even seemingly simple violations, such as crossing a double white line, your
license can be take away for six months, which they will do on the spot
pending a court hearing. And that is the least of your worries.
