re: transit visa through Belarus .... my advice is get the transit visa ....
I went through Belarus several years back on the train, did not think I
needed a transit visa because I was not setting foot off the train anywhere
in Belarus ... they ordered me off the train at the border (the middle of
nowhere), my Russian is not bad but it was still very unsettling ... my wife
(in Moscow) had to get a "connected", business associate in Minsk to vouch
for me to help me get to Minsk to the airport to get the missing transit
visa .... finally got to my destination outside of Belarus 20 hours late
.... get the transit visa ...
