I lived in Russia for 10 years (1998-2008) and I never once saw a coin-operated
laundrymat/launderette.

If you think about it, it's pretty impractical, given the denominations of
Russian coins. Although there are some 10-ruble coins floating out there, the
everyday max is overwhelmingly five rubles.

My local coin-operated launderette in Berlin costs 3.50 euros per load, so in
the ruble equivalent, imagine having to pump a machine with 26 or more coins at
one go!

In St. Petersburg, I did once use a launderette with ordinary, consumer-grade
washing machines where you could pay for an inexpensive service wash, but you
could not wash the clothes yourself.

There are cleaners where you can have a service wash done, such as the Diana
chain, if they're still around.

Apart from that, your first respondent is right -- either learn how to do your
laundry by hand or bite the bullet and get a washing machine set up in your
flat.

Kirill.
