This type of equipment was token operated, separate washing machines,
centrifuges and tumble dryers, all professional stuff made in western
Europe. Ironing was separate again, press, roll and steam manikin for
shirts. Typically a token was sold at roughly 50 cents equivalent and I
remember it had French words on it. There were dozens of places to go ten
years ago under the (AFAIR) "Chaika" brand name, these even had the token
operated dry clean machines, the buildings are still there but some were
converted into shops (but, people can still leave their laundry there for
wash or dry clean) to pick next day or so. Saw a building like I used to go
near my office at Oktyabrskaya street, will check next Friday.

Subject: Expat List Laundrymat

I lived in Russia for 10 years (1998-2008) and I never once saw a
coin-operated laundrymat/launderette.

If you think about it, it's pretty impractical, given the denominations of
Russian coins. Although there are some 10-ruble coins floating out there,
the everyday max is overwhelmingly five rubles.

My local coin-operated launderette in Berlin costs 3.50 euros per load, so
in the ruble equivalent, imagine having to pump a machine with 26 or more
coins at one go!

In St. Petersburg, I did once use a launderette with ordinary,
consumer-grade washing machines where you could pay for an inexpensive
service wash, but you could not wash the clothes yourself.

There are cleaners where you can have a service wash done, such as the Diana
chain, if they're still around.

Apart from that, your first respondent is right -- either learn how to do
your laundry by hand or bite the bullet and get a washing machine set up in
your flat.

Kirill.
