I had this and many other mysterious errors going on. This, and the 
switch from egcs to pgcs forced me to abandon Mandrake 6 to RH6. Even 
if I did install egcs, many programs still had problems to compile. I 
guess my copy was built for i586, and not for i686 and this could 
have been the source of some of  the problems... I'm no linux guru or 
coder, I just want the thing to work to start with.

This got me thinking..., why am I still on this list ???
