Yes, been there, done that!  We just wrote off 6 older pentiums because,
although they worked perfectly under Win 3.11, they had a hdd controller that
win9x won't talk reliably to (big red X in device manager - no error messages
or warnings, just frequent lockup and other glitches - at least if Linux
doesn't like it, it tells you!) I might try putting Linux on one of them one
day - just to see...
