Ummm, when the brand is Dell, not necessarily. Turtle Beach
Montego sound drivers on the Aureal website are stated to work
for all TBM sound cards EXCEPT Dell. Dell has enough buying
power to have OEM-only versions of cards made to their specs, and
often these DO require Dell drivers, even in Windows.

www.opensound.org supposedly has a driver that works (but, with
Dell, who knows?) for about $30 DEFINITELY try before you buy.
They will let you download a driver that provides 3 hours of
sound before you must use the unlock code.

Dell offers linux on SOME of its machines. I have worked on some
Inspirons and others not offered natively in linux by the
manufacturer and my success rate is lower than it is with the
rather proprietary Gateways and Compaqs. Again, this seems to be
because Dell uses cards which are driven only by its own drivers
even though they may appear to be similar to retail offerings.

While Dell will most likely tell you they don't support linux on
that model, usually the tech can save you hours of fruitless
labor and searching by letting you know how proprietary the card
is--in other words, call them and ask about drivers (in Windows)
for the cards in question. If he refers you to a public website,
it is likely that you can succeed. If not, best abandon the
effort.
