Quick question about the SIGHUP: Only root can send signals to root processes, right? So, reboot in single-user mode, then try pppd. See if it still gets the SIGHUP. I mean, if there are no other programs, it *should* work, right? There are no programs ('cept the kernel!) to give it the SIGHUP, so I imagine it probably won't get it.
