You say your alsa config file(s) do not change/are not changed upon reboot? If they are, you could try setting the config file attribute to immutable so nothing will change it, period. My more immediate interest is in your ac97. I have an Athlon 700 on an AK72 AOpen board, VIA chipset, and the ac97. I haven't even tried to get the onboard sound to work, going instead with my AudioPCI. However, if the ac97 does a good job, there is an attractiveness to opening up a PCI slot and using the onboard sound. When the alsa settings are proper, does the ac97 do a good job? Nice sound? Work with games? Does windoze handle it OK? I am wondering about the quality of the onboard sound, overall. Finally, where did the snd-card-via686a kernel module come from? Thanks for any information, praedor
