Fixed. I followed the instructions in the cooker mailing list and I can now
properly use KDE with antialiasing. The fix is unfortunate in that it
requires the downloading and installing of M$ fonts - not a free license but
free to use (so far at least).

They (Cooker developers) are attempting to determine the nature of the
problem for a better fix - one that doesn't require the downloading of extra,
extraneous truetype fonts.

Anyway, the instructions are:

You need an XftConfig file to define your font mappings for qt -> X11.
The temp fix is:

go to http://keithp.com/~keithp/fonts and download the truetype.tar.gz and
XftConfig files. Untar truetype.tar.gz and move the resulting truetype
directory to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts (if you already have such a directory,
copy all the files in the directory to your existing directory). Put the
XftConfig file in /etc/X11. To keep your fonts migrated from windoze via
drakfont, add the path to the drakfont fonts to XftConfig (ie, dir
"/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont" to XftConfig below the already existant
Type1 and truetype paths). Restart X.

You can now properly select fonts and all appears as it should AND you get
antialiasing. Apparently, there is a problem with mixing aa and non-aa fonts
in the same app. Myself, I am using arial for everything except my fixed
font, of course. Looks great.
