This is just a suggestion:

Do you have any Windows 2000 machines on the LAN? In my limited experience
of W2K, by default it will try to register itself with a dynamic DNS server.
If you can trace which packets are leaving the W2K machines (if any) you may
see strange DNS traffic leaving W2K heading for the ISP's DNS server.

You can change this behaviour in the W2K network properties, under local LAN
connections/"register this computer's address with DNS" (or something
similar).
