Well I did re-install using a seagate ST32155W and a 2094W controller.
8.0 installed without complaint and "just worked"

Hummm. Changing drives sure did change the behavior of the install.
So to re-cap ;

1: Mark suggested that using WD was a possible source of trouble.
2: Changing to a different drive caused the system to install 8.0
without trouble.

Conclusion: Mark's right :-) and in the future I'll remember that the
drive
I'm using might be a factor when having trouble installing.

I've had drives fail and develop bad sectors etc.. but this has been a
learning expereince
for me. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread, perhaps someone
else out there
will gain from the discussion.

I won't join in the "which drives best" war (I'm obviously not
qualified, since I was running WD ;-) )
but I also won't deny that in my instance changing drives as suggested
worked.

Thanks Mark.
