I posted this message on the Newbie list and haven't gotten any kind of reply to it yet, which made me wonder if I shouldn't bring it over to this list and see if anyone knew a solution for it over here (or if anyone else had this trouble before). Hopefully, I'm not stepping over any boundaries, my apologies if I am.
I bought LM 7.2 (Deluxe) last spring and I've finally found time to install and get it up and running. Last night I decided to run Mandrake Update after I got my modem running properly. For the most part this was working fine. However, there were a few problems that came up and now MU doesn't seem to be working properly. This may take a while to explain, I'll try not to be too long winded. There was an update for MU which was to correct a problem with it that would not show the "type" of update. In other words the version that came on the install CD would not show if it was a "Security" update or "General" etc. It would only show "n/a" for everything. After getting that update I was able to see the "type". However, upon refreshing the list of updates it says that MU still needs to be updated. If I try to get that update, it seems like it installs, but then refreshing does the same thing and shows that I still need it. This happens also with quite a handful of the updates. LICQ, gnupg, gpm, mc, just to name a few. I would normally assume that things were installed correctly and that MU is showing me all the available updates, even the ones I had updated already. This doesn't seem to be the case. When trying to install the update for ALSA (I believe that's the name of it), to help with my sound, it tells me that gnupg was not installed properly. No amount of trying to update gnupg has done any good. So it seems that certain updates are not being updated. Keep in mind that I am not receiving any errors outside of the ALSA/gnupg dependency error. In addition to this there are at least two updates that hang my system and will not install, also with no error messages. When attempting to update cups and Zope, MU goes through the process of downloading the packages. It then shows the "Preparing for Install" message. During the whole download/install process MU shows a little graphic of a block going back and forth to show that it's working. During the install process of cups and Zope, this graphic freezes. At this point, I am not longer able to move my mouse cursor and my hard drive sounds like it's being written to/loaded from. (This is basically the same noise that the hard drive goes through when the packages are being unpacked and installed, only this time it continues forever.) The only options I have at this point are to manually reset the computer (with the switch on the PC case) or let it go on. If I let it continue, the hard drive activity continues for somewhere around 20-30 minutes, at which point the system resets and returns to the login screen. One final thought on this. I didn't realize that LM started certain services automatically. There were a few things that were running that could have allowed access to my system via the Internet while I was running MU. I have since prevented them from loading at boot. Some of these services were: wu-ftp, Zope, Apache, etc. I'm wondering if somehow my system was compromised and that the compromise might be preventing MU from updating critical files. Maybe not, but I thought I would include this in case it was relevant. If anyone can help me work this out I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Ivan.
