Hi Brian,
thanks for the responce,
the ipconfig output reads 
ip 169.254.117.142
subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
and pinging results in host unreachable 
i have also tried to set an ip address and gateway  manually on the win98 
machine to no avail ,
the dhcpd.conf for machine #1 gives a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and ip's of 
192.168.0.16-253.
machine #3 has a ip 192.168.0.16
