Nope--doesn't matter if he has a CDROM in the drive  or not.  The 
message is from sr, which means that he has a CDRW most likely and the 
/dev/cdrom isn't pointing there.

as root

ln -fs /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom

should improve playing audio CDs
