I just finished playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein. To get it working with
sound, I had to get out of KDE (I went to Windowmaker though it likely
doesn't matter as long as it isn't KDE) and started it with soundwrapper. It
worked great.

Under KDE I tried starting it with artsdsp but this did nothing. I didn't
try artswrapper. For the game, try another windowmanager (windowmaker,
enlightenment, whatever) and try with soundwrapper again.

This also worked with windoze games under winex. I did a "soundwrapper winex
War3.exe" for Warcraft III and it worked fine as well.
