What he's saying is that when you think you're booting the old kernel, you're actually booting the new one. Look at /etc/lilo.conf and see what it's using (probably /boot/vmlinuz). Then go look in /boot and you'll see that vmlinuz is pointing to the most recent kernel you just installed. Blue skies...
