Hi Rod, you're right here. However - doing what you described is IMHO a little bit too complicated. An easyer way is to boot from the Installation or rescue CD-Rom, mount the first partition, and issue a: lilo -r /mnt -C /etc/lilo.conf and the lilo is back again installed. So - it never really was a problem. You don't even need an original running kernel for this.
What I'm using also lately for my mini-ITX based systems is a USB-Memory Stick. I have partitionned it into 2 partitions - and the first one had the Mandrake installation/rescue CD-Rom Image dd'd to it. IN the BIOS Setups, I do have the harddisk as first Boot device configured, USB as second. So - if it does not work from Harddisk - it jumps to the USB stick - and that works great :) Cheers Joerg On Friday 01 August 2003 11:37, Ron Stodden wrote: > Joerg Mertin wrote: [...] > A word of warning here ... > > Any procedure that changes the start or end sector of a bootable > partition will render the partition unbootable. > > So you must firstly have a floppy boot (mkbootdisk) for that partition > and kernel version.
