you're right here. However - doing what you described is IMHO a little bit too 
complicated. An easyer way is to boot from the Installation or rescue CD-Rom, 
mount the first partition, and issue a: lilo -r /mnt -C /etc/lilo.conf
and the lilo is back again installed. So - it never really was a problem. You 
don't even need an original running kernel for this.

What I'm using also lately for my mini-ITX based systems is a USB-Memory 
Stick. I have partitionned it into 2 partitions - and the first one had the 
Mandrake installation/rescue CD-Rom Image dd'd to it.
IN the BIOS Setups, I do have the harddisk as first Boot device configured, 
USB as second. So - if it does not work from Harddisk - it jumps to the USB 
stick - and that works great :)
