Here are some questions that come to mind:

* Who did he log in as? root or a user? 
* Did he set a root password during install?
* "The program" refers to gtcam or Gnome?
* Is he sure gtcam is installed?
* What directory was he looking in?
* What file manager was he using?
* What "view" was he using in the file manager? Icons? Details?
