You said it more eloquently than I did. >From what I gather from reading TheOilDrum.com, working on an oil rig is a very macho gig, dirty and difficult and dangerous, and the workers are like a special fraternity that takes great pride in what they do. Now if we could only find them dirty, dangerous, difficult, well-paid jobs that would satisfy their macho pride doing something that wasn't so destructive to the environment and didn't feed our oil addiction...
