A friend who was military brass in the "peace keeping" mission in Bosnia and 
later in Afghanistan as well said many if not most of the "Sufis", who are 
painted in the west as a type of 'open-minded, new age Muslim' sect have 
actually become mostly radicalized. But then again, it's not unusual for people 
to regress developmentally when a major stressor (i.e. military invasion and 
occupation) occurs. It's human nature to regress to lower levels of development 
in order to survive, like whacky fundamentalist forms of Islam or Americans 
resorting to X-tian fundamentalism and Right-wing madness. Of course this also 
means when we destabilize these Islamic countries, there will also be a 
persecution of "the other": peoples who are not Muslims, as in lower levels of 
development, you often lose the ability to see the world from "the other's" 
eyes.

God knows what happens to the Mandaeans of Iraq after we decimated their 
country. Some have been relocated here, but many who remained were forced to 
leave or be persecuted. One of the last Gnostic sects destroyed by our folly...
