Missed the reference to Douglas Engelbart. Alan Kay (lead/participant for most of the GUI and much of the other advanced technology work at Xerox) says that almost every major computer invention in the past 45 years was inspired by Douglas Engelbart's "Mother of all Demos"... google "Mother of all Demos" for more info.
