Government sets policy for taxing and spending and is responsible for balancing
the inevitable excesses of business through regulation and enforcement. Who you
elect to office drives or doesn't drive the economy depending on the
vicissitudes of the political ideologies and unfortunately, who happens to be
in whose pocket at the time. FDR's policies put this county back on it's
economic feet and it has driven the Republicans and Libertarians nuts for the
past 70 years because it means the rich can't get richer on the backs of the
poor. They hate the government helping anyone for anything. They especially
hate the social safety net. It's why they want to privatize social security and
voucherize Medicare and turn it over to Wall Street.
