Maharishi on Union (yoga) vs. disunion (viyoga):

I've often wondered why MMY chose the Bhagavad Gita to explain his
spiritual system, rather than Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. So far as I know,
TMers don't recite the Gita in the domes during program. That decision
almost derailed the whole scientific research direction in the early TM
movemen. One day I told Jerry Jarvis that SIMS should come out with a
monthly magazine that featured "tales from India", sort of like the S.F.
Oracle hippie underground magazine. Jerry objected by making the comment
that SIMS was going for the science, and that what they didn't need was
more tales from India. A few weeks later MMY's commentary on the
Bhagavad Gita came out. What!?
In India a yoke is used on draft animals which are then driven for work
by the shudra class. But, kshatriyas or the ruling class don't have
anything to do with farming or yoking animals - they use horses and
chariots with a harness, hence their spiritual program is called Raja
Yoga. In a dualism there is no "union" - if there were, you would have
one, not two. Yoga is based on the dualism of Purusha and prakriti which
are eternally separate. Go figure.
/"The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are often labelled as Raja yoga. It
defines yoga as citta-vrtti-nirodhah (the cessation of the perturbations
of the mind). The aim is to still the mind in order to reach Kaivalya,
the "isolation" of purusha (the motionless consciousness "essence") from
prakriti (the promordial matter from which everything is made, including
mind and emotions)."/
