This is why I bought a "dumb TV". First off, I figured the apps on a Smart TV would be updated for about 2 years and then they'd stop updating them. That's what they do with BD players. I have a Chromecast though I haven't used it in a while because the U-Verse gateway wifi is too weak to get a strong signal to it so it can lose the connection. But I have an access point coming today and some found it powerful enough to just turn off the wifi on the U-Verse gateway and use it to cover the house. Back in December my Sony S480 BD player started crashing so I ordered up an Sony S1200. Both players were free from "rewards." The S1200 has the latest apps on it. Secondly, apps add about $200 to a TV. The dumb TV was a blow-out or loss leader at the local electronics candy store but is a damn good set for the price. I've never felt the need for "apps" on a TV, or on a phone come to think of it. I've got a really dumb TV and plug a Panasonic PVR in to watch stuff. The old ways suit me, too much technology these days. It's like they do things because they can not because it's a good idea. Or maybe some people love and expect this stuff?
