That style has been around for centuries. The guitar makes a nice percusive instrument.

Two hand tapping technique on the guitar, interspersed with body tapping has been around for a couple of decades, Michael Hedges being probably the first to use it extensively, esp. using open tunings and the slapping of strings to produce chords. In the video link given, the guitarist was playing in the style of Michael Hedges. Steve Hackett was probably the first guitarist to use it in mainstream recording with the band Genesis.

One can see old footage of Segovia doing similar things, with only one hand.
