Something I wrote to a friend after seeing Ron Paul last night:

I was basically impressed with him. I was a bit put off by his flouting his
association with Ronald Reagan, and pronouncing himself a “true Reagan
conservative.” Remember Iran-Contra? If Ron Paul is opposed to US meddling
in foreign affairs, he’s making a mistake in invoking Reagan’s name. I also
have a problem with the gun control issue. As you know, the 2nd amendment
reads, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free
State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be
infringed.” This was written in the days before AK-47’s, in which there was
no professional military, and the farmers had to arm themselves against
potential attacks by Indians and the British. I have no problem with people
owning guns now for self-defense or hunting, but I think that guns whose
firepower exceeds those purposes should be forbidden, and all gun ownership
should depend on meeting requirements more strict than those for driving a
car, which is potentially as deadly but not intentionally so. As I
understand Ron Paul, he would not agree with those sentiments.
