Is there anything that I can "borrow" from FC4 that might do the trick in 3?

You can multiple sites within the same application database by branch (you might get away with this in 3.0). Plus the plugin architecture lets you load a different set of plugins by domain (or other environment switch). Plugins can include modified functionality and or views unique to the subsite in question.
