Why not use Darcs?  John, if I recall correctly you have used darcs  
before.  It is about as easy as git and very easy to branch.  The  
only downside to darcs seems to be documentation for finding tags or  
patches: there is precious little documentation on what --matches  
patterns you can use (I can give you a summary--it is hidden in  
source code comments, mostly) and there is a bug where, if you have a  
--partial repository (just the most recent changes and a pristine  
copy) you can't push code to a --complete repository.  Perhaps git is  
faster.  The primary reason I suggest darcs is that John may be more  
familiar with it.
