What I've often heard agrees with what Stan and others are saying.
When a cat gets out and can't be found, he or she is often hiding not
far away. This was the case recently with a cat on the Chronic Renal
Failure list; he got out through a window without a screen and was
gone for two weeks. Fortunately his person guessed where he was
hiding; she couldn't get to him under a building, but she left food
out for him and eventually he came out and climbed into her lap. They
probably hide because being outside is so overwhelming to an indoor
kitty.
