We used valium with my cat Willy.  (I lost him in 2000 to kidney failure.)  The valium did help his appetite, and he had an attitude.  You can't use it long term though because it causes other problems.

He would act odd on it though.  (I know some of you remember this.) He would go to the 'toy box' and get every toy and bring them into the living room and set them down by me.  One at a time, like 10 or more trips back and forth bringing the toys.  If I put them back he'd go get them again.  He did that everytime I gave him valium. lol.

My vet recommends valium for serious cases. The downside is that the cat
will hallucinate or overestimate its ability to do odd things. We were going
to use it on Magellan when he was sick but I gave him 4 hours to eat on his
own. He ate in 2 hours. My vet wanted him put into a carrier while he was
under the influence of valium if I chose to use it. He said that it does
work really well..
