To the extent that the people who are automatically selected committed (most 
of) their own patches, they should have known that that would cause them to 
become GA members.

There is indeed however a problem that somebody whose patches get merged by a 
third party could be induced into the GA without even knowing. That's probably 
concerns few if any contributiors in actual practice fortunately.

Actually, kinda yes? The difference though is that those people aren't subject 
to being voted into the GA. So this can be mostly fixed by just allowing people 
to confirm that they want to be in the GA, or at least allow people to resign 
from the GA discretionarily.
