Putting wool into hot water, with no agitation, should not have caused felting. You have to have agitation AND hot water, for that to occur.
You do have my heartfelt sympathy, though. Having felted many, many, many items made of mohair, I know that sinking feeling as you reach in to pull out something fabulous, and get only something felted. Any chance of using the felted skeins for scrubbies?
