I saw an exhibit of Shetland lace knitting in a museum in London
back in 1972. Can't recall the name of the museum unfortunately.

The shawls displayed were knit of wool about the thickness of
machine embroidery thread as I recall (very dimly). There was a
shawl with ordinary machine sewing thread draped over it to show
that the yarn was finer than that. Another shawl that was displayed
pulled halfway through a woman's size 6 wedding ring to prove that
indeed it could be done so.
