Thanks so much to all of you for the very interesting comments on the great wheel/flax
wheel questions. It was delightful reading the ideas. The American Colonial period was
a complex time and I agree that even down to the level of individual households, there
were no simple, across-the-board answers.   I think that in a very American way, we
broke away from class and sex based traditions and rules when we came across the sea ,
we made do with what we had at hand, came up with innovations, focused on what was
pressing at the moment to gain a foothold and tried to blend the best of the old world
with the needs of the new.
Since I started thinking about these questions, I have looked at Colonial textiles in
a very different way - they hold within a fascinating story if you can just unravel
it...
