No, he was a mathematician.  Early computers did not use 8 bit words.

If you (or anyone) believes CD 'quality' sounds rough, I assure you it has 
nothing to do with the sample rate.  Spend a few bucks and buy a well 
designed CD player and you will 'discover' that 44.1 kHz works just fine.
