You should make sure that the video mode is set for 32 bit colour. The speed difference between 24 bit and 32 bit mode is remarkable with some cards, with 32 bit mode being much faster. Although this seems back-to-front, the speed difference is due to the way that the video data is handled by the processor and the data bus. I've found the 2D performance of the 3Dfx chipset cards impressive.
