You might do well to look at the LS-30 Nikon. Since it's being replaced,
very good deals are becoming available on it, and it includes the infared
channel for "ICE" and I have seen refurbished units for $499, although I
have no experience with them. And right out of the box, it does incredible
scans. Since I'm an amateur like you, getting a additional 5 years of
warranty coverage for only $100 was very important to me. Plus, with Vuescan
($40), the results are very good for the price. I'm not sure how much more I
would have had to spend to get significantly better scans, but it would
reach the point of diminishing returns.
