I think at the bottom of this dispute is a difference in the meaning of the word "composer" in different subcultures. Like the word "horn," it is used quite differently in classical, jazz, and civilian circles, and all the meanings are equally valid provided they don't stray out of their appointed realms--which is what I think happened here.
